Child Safety on Roblox

Roblox aims to provide a safe and positive environment for all users, especially children. We take the safety of our youngest users seriously, appreciating how top of mind internet safety is for parents and policymakers. Our platform is designed with safety in mind, and we continually evolve our practices to address emerging challenges.

Our Approach to Child Safety

  • Proactive Communication Monitoring: To promote a safe environment, we currently moderate all text-based conversations on Roblox. These messages are not encrypted, allowing us to monitor communications effectively. We use automated tools to review and block inappropriate content in text chats before others can see it. Voice conversations are not filtered. While voice communications are not filtered, they are monitored and we apply nudges. In addition, we have dedicated teams focused on proactively identifying and removing exploitative content, disrupting attempts to disseminate it, cooperating with valid law enforcement requests, and engaging with organizations around the world that combat the sexual exploitation of children.

  • Content Restrictions: We actively moderate all content on Roblox whether images, audio, or video using a combination of human review and AI-powered tools. This helps us detect and prevent content that violates our Community Standards, adding multiple layers of protection for users. Roblox also does not allow users to send images or videos via Chat. Please note that we cannot prevent all problematic content from appearing on Roblox, and we encourage parents to talk to their kids about internet safety and to understand what their kids are doing online. We do our best to detect and moderate content that violates our Community Standards.

  • Safeguarding Against Off-Platform Risks: We're constantly improving our detection systems to identify conversations that attempt to take anyone, especially children, off of Roblox to another platform. This includes identifying risky behavior patterns and blocking or flagging attempts to share personal contact information. We recognize that safety practices vary across the internet, and many platforms aren’t built with children in mind.

  • Age-Appropriate Access: We carefully consider the content within experiences and the conduct it might attract. For experiences that may be more suitable for teens, we implement age gates to prohibit access for users under 9. We also offer content maturity guidelines to help parents understand what types of content their kids may encounter, along with tools that let parents systematically restrict content that may be too mature for their child.

  • Policies: Roblox’s policies are designed to help protect users, especially children, from harm. We explicitly prohibit behaviors such as bullying, harassment, scamming, and any form of predatory or exploitative conduct. This includes sexual conversation, grooming, and the sharing or requesting of child sexual exploitation material. These violations are not tolerated and when we become aware of these violations, we take action in accordance with our Community Standards.

  • Collaboration: Addressing child safety online is an industry-wide issue. Roblox actively collaborates with other platforms, academic and industry consortiums, law enforcement, and leading organizations including the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC), Save the Children, the Digital Wellness Lab, ConnectSafely, the United Nations Office of the Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Violence Against Children, Tech Coalition, Internet Watch Foundation, and the Family Online Safety Institute (FOSI). Through these partnerships, we strengthen our safety measures and reporting processes, enhance online safety standards, share research driven insights, and advocate for policies that prioritize the well-being of young people around the world.
