About Facial Age Estimation
Facial Age Estimation provides a quick and secure way for users to unlock chat on Roblox. This built-in protection limits interactions to users within a similar age range, offering parents greater confidence. More information on chat and other Parental Controls is available below.
Roblox requires users in Australia, New Zealand, and the Netherlands to complete an age check to access any Roblox chat feature. This requirement will be extended to all other regions where chat is available in early January.

Using Facial Age Estimation
To go through the Facial Age Estimation process (or have your child go through the process), log into your respective accounts. In Settings, use the gear icon to find Account info. Navigate to Age Group and select Continue with selfie. Find step-by-step instructions here.
How does facial age estimation help protect children on Roblox
Roblox is setting a new safety standard by limiting communication between minors and adults via required Facial Age Estimation for all users accessing chat features. This age check assigns users to age groups (under 9, 9-12, 13-15, 16-17, 18-20, or 21+), enabling age-based chat where users communicate within their own and similar peer groups.
Age-based communication: fostering connection between peers
We believe matching peer age groups promotes safer, age-appropriate interactions and development. Users must verify their age to access chat, ensuring better age understanding and limiting communication outside respective groups.
Users who want to communicate on Roblox will need to confirm their age via Facial Age Estimation or ID verification. Then, Roblox will only allow people to chat in similar age groups unless they are confirmed as Trusted Connections.
Making it easier for parents to know who’s chatting
Making age checks mandatory for every user who wants to chat on Roblox helps users better understand who they’re communicating with, and limits chat between minors and adults, restricting interactions outside of their age group to only users who are confirmed as Trusted Connections - like family or siblings.

Age checks are entirely optional, and it is only necessary to enable access to Roblox's chat features. We designed the Facial Age Estimation process to protect privacy and personal information. Images and video are deleted immediately after processing.

Trusted Connections
Through Trusted Connections, age-checked users 13 or older can chat freely with people they know. We'll soon roll out dedicated solutions for direct chat between parents and children younger than 13 or between siblings in different age groups.
Social media links (upcoming)
Will allow age-checked users 13 and older to view social media links on Experience Details Pages and Communities (starting early 2026) so they can follow along with updates and share feedback on their favorite games.
Studio Team Create (upcoming)
Will allow age-checked users to co-create experiences with other users of similar ages using Team Create, Roblox Studio's real-time collaboration feature (starting early 2026).
How to complete an age check on Roblox
A combination of Facial Age Estimation technology, ID verification, and verified parental consent provide a more accurate measure of a user's age. Roblox will only allow people to chat in similar age groups unless they are confirmed as Trusted Connections. These added layers of protection will help provide users with access to age-appropriate features and content. We believe this move will set a standard that other gaming, social media, and communication platforms will follow.
