Roblox Announces Ambitious Plan to Expand Age Estimation to All Users
New Technology for Age Estimation and What’s Coming Next
Today, we’re announcing an ambitious plan to expand age estimation to all Roblox users who access our on-platform communication features by the end of this year. Using a combination of facial age estimation technology, ID age verification, and verified parental consent, this process will provide a more accurate measure of a user's age than simply relying on what someone types in when they create an account. With this information, we’ll also launch new systems designed to limit communication between adults and minors unless they know each other in the real world. These added layers of protection will help provide users with access to developmentally appropriate features and content. We hope this move sets a standard that other gaming, social media, and communication platforms follow.
We’re taking this step as part of our long-term vision as a platform for all ages. We expect that our approach to communication safety will become best practice for other online platforms, whether lawmakers pass laws requiring age verification for all platforms in the future or not.
Building on a Strong Foundation
Our users, creator community, parents, partners, legislators all want the same thing we do: To help keep young people safe while they play, learn, or explore on Roblox. We’re continually innovating on this front—refining and optimizing our safety systems, policies, and moderation tools.
Since January 2025, we’ve shipped over 100 safety initiatives. This includes new tools for age-based communications like Trusted Connections, Roblox Sentinel—a new open-source AI system that helps us detect early signals of child endangerment—and continued improvements to our voice and text filters. We’ve also rolled out new technology designed to detect servers where a large number of users are breaking our rules in experiences that are otherwise innocuous, and take them down.
We’re expanding this technology and refining our avatar detection model so we can scan these scenes and moderate the avatars that are breaking our rules. We’ve also joined a top rating organization and expanded our experience guidelines to restrict social hangout experiences depicting private spaces, make unrated experiences unplayable, and increase the age limit for restricted experiences from 17 to 18.
All these initiatives build on the layered safety systems that already exist on Roblox. Unlike many other online platforms, Roblox proactively monitors all text chat on the platform, prevents user-to-user image sharing, and has default settings designed to prevent users younger than 13 from using private chat or voice chat. We also filter public chat to block inappropriate content. Roblox provides parental controls so families can customize default settings to what they feel is best for their child. We recognize that no system is foolproof and we cannot prevent all problematic content from appearing on Roblox. That’s why we provide resources to help parents to talk to their children about internet safety and provide them with tools on the platform to give them more information about their child’s activity on Roblox.
We will continue to build a platform where users of all ages can explore, create, and share in age-appropriate ways. We will continue to share our progress and look forward to announcing more updates as we implement them.
