Roblox Celebrates Passage of Federal Online Safety Legislation

Take It Down Act Signed Into Law

May 19 marked an important milestone in the fight to create a safer internet for everyone, especially children. President Donald Trump signed the bipartisan Take It Down Act, co-sponsored by Sens. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.), into law. This new law will create standards for tech and social media platforms to remove nonconsensual intimate images. Roblox is proud to have supported this legislation and honored that Founder and CEO David Baszucki was present at the White House as the act was signed into law.

As a platform, Roblox offers users limitless opportunities to explore, create, and share with others across the globe. These opportunities come with the need for guardrails and tools to help keep our 97.8 million average daily users safe. As the use of AI services becomes more commonplace, we see a need for safeguards to prevent and address any potential harms, especially for the youngest users.

A History of Supporting Safety Legislation

Roblox has consistently supported legislation that improves user safety and reinforces our belief that safety should be built into platforms from the start. We were among a small number of tech companies to support the California Age Appropriate Design Code, which required companies to implement strong privacy protections for minors and apply “best interests of a child” standards for new products.

Roblox also endorsed the revised Children and Teens' Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA 2.0), an important measure to protect kids’ online safety. This updated legislation seeks to strengthen and update privacy protections for young people, especially regarding advertising and protecting teens’ data. The new legislation provides greater protections for older teens, not just those under the age of 13, and advances standards for data minimization—the idea that we should collect as little data from children as possible. While Roblox has been COPPA-certified by FTC-approved certifiers for over a decade, we recognize that these regulations need updating to reflect our changing digital landscape. We applaud the leadership of Senators Edward Markey (D-Mass.) and Bill Cassidy (R-La.) in championing this legislation and working to update it.

Our Safety Innovations

Putting safety first isn't new. Since our founding nearly two decades ago, Roblox has approached user safety as a fundamental principle. We've built our platform to collect minimal personal information by default and established robust safety protections. Safety at Roblox is built into the fabric of our platform. Our default safety protections include:

  • Strong text filters to block inappropriate words and phrases

  • Robust parental controls

  • Age-appropriate safety settings

  • Proactive moderation of voice and text chat, images, meshes, and full experiences

Over the past year, we've worked diligently to enhance these protections, adding new parental controls and limiting how children under 13 can communicate on our platform. We hold ourselves to a higher standard because we understand that the work of protecting users, especially children, is never complete.

Our recently updated parental controls make it easier and more intuitive for parents to manage their child's settings. A particularly important feature is remote management, which allows parents to adjust controls and review their child's activity even when they aren't physically together. This feature acknowledges the reality of modern family life while still prioritizing safety.

While the signing of the Take It Down Act represents significant progress, it's just one step in an ongoing journey. Roblox is proud to have worked with Senators Cruz and Klobuchar, Representatives Maria Elvira Salazar (R-Fla.) and Madeleine Dean (D-Penn.), and their colleagues in both chambers, to pass this historic legislation.

“As technology continues to evolve, so too must our approach to safety,” said Baszucki, Roblox’s CEO and co-founder. “Roblox remains committed to leading by example, showing how immersive, creative platforms can be safe spaces for users of all ages. We remain focused on innovating, collaborating, and advocating for a digital world that provides opportunity, creativity, and connection, without compromising on safety.”
