Roblox Launches New Licensing Platform For Experiences

Unlocking Licensing at Scale For Roblox Creators and IP Holders

  • With our new licensing platform, including the Roblox License Manager and Licenses catalog, rights holders of creative works can partner with creators to reach a large and engaged audience. With this launch, creators can build experiences with popular intellectual property (IP).

  • Long term, the Roblox License Manager will be available to all eligible IP holders and additional license types will be introduced, offering creators and IP holders greater flexibility.

  • We are launching with prominent IPs from Lionsgate, Netflix, Sega, and Kodansha. More will be announced in the coming months.

At RDC last year, we announced an ambitious goal: to have 10% of all global gaming content revenue flow through the Roblox ecosystem, benefiting our creator community. As Roblox is a platform that supports millions of user-created experiences, its community is key to achieving this goal. Our creators are thriving; in 2024, they earned $923 million on the platform, a 25% increase from $741 million in 2023. They are on track to receive over $1 billion of earnings this year.

To reach our 10% goal, we need a diverse group of creators building a broad range of experiences on Roblox across gaming, entertainment, and more.

Our vision is to empower all creators to easily partner with the franchises they love and bring the franchises’ licensed IP into their experiences. To achieve this, we're simplifying how IP owners manage and license their IP at scale so that creators can use that IP on Roblox.

Today, we’re launching the Roblox License Manager and Licenses catalog with four partners: Lionsgate, Netflix, Sega, and Kodansha. Starting today, seven IPs are available for licensed use by eligible creators including "Squid Game," "Stranger Things," "Twilight," "Saw," "Divergent," "Now You See Me," and "Like A Dragon." Two more will follow in the coming weeks, with additional IPs being added later this year.

Introducing the Roblox License Manager and Licenses Catalog

Until now, licensing IP was a complex and time-consuming process. Potential licensees had to negotiate with a variety of stakeholders and submit to regular reviews, and the process could take months. Not only did rights holders struggle to discover interested creators, but the nature of the process meant that only a select group of larger studios were able to benefit. To keep pace with the iterative nature of development on Roblox, full of user-generated experiences that creators are continually evolving and updating, we recognized the need to provide creators with a flexible, simple-to-use licensing solution.

This is where the Roblox License Manager and Licenses catalog comes in; a new, innovative approach to game and interactive media licensing at scale that creates new opportunities for all rights holders and creators to partner together.

The License Manager equips rights holders with new self-serve IP management tools, making it easy to provide licenses to their IP at scale for use on Roblox by Roblox creators. IP holders can now:

  • Register and create IP licenses, customize the terms that govern use of their IP, proactively scan experiences for IP usage, offer licensed uses directly to creators and automatically collect the revenue share.

  • Offer licensed use of IP to creators by (a) identifying experiences that may qualify for licensed use of their IP and (b) listing the IP available for licensed use in the new Licenses catalog. Creators can browse the catalog and apply for licensed use of IP, and rights holders can review and approve or decline the request.

What used to be a months-long process, often limited to a select few, now allows all eligible creators and rights holders to secure licensed use of an IP in just days or hours.

Roblox offers the opportunity for rights holders, including brands, to reach a large and engaged audience of 97.8 million average daily active users*—many of whom represent the next generation of consumers. For creators who are able to make licensed use of IP, this means an opportunity to build an experience centrally featuring popular IP. Small and agile teams of creators are building games that attract millions of users, proving the massive potential of building on Roblox. We’ve seen games like Grow a Garden reach record-breaking numbers of concurrent users.

Introducing Our First IP Partners

Combining our community’s passion for creation with amazing IP gives creators new opportunities and we’re excited to announce the first IP partners to populate our Licenses catalog.

Lionsgate

Lionsgate, the world’s largest independent film and television studio, is known for its diverse portfolio of films, television series, and blockbuster franchises that captivate audiences globally. Recognizing the potential of reaching the massive and engaged audience on Roblox, Lionsgate is working with creators to build immersive digital experiences on the platform, based on their iconic franchises including "Twilight," "Saw," "Now You See Me," "Divergent," and other high-profile IPs.

"Roblox offers a unique and dynamic platform for our fans to connect with beloved franchises in interactive and personal ways," said Jenefer Brown, Executive Vice President & Head of Global Products and Experiences at Lionsgate. "We're excited to engage with the Roblox creator community and can’t wait to see the innovative experiences they bring to life with our IP."

Sega

Sega, a major gaming partner with a rich history of innovation, is joining this launch and will begin offering Like A Dragon (a.k.a. Yakuza) as potential licensed IP for Roblox creators.

Like a Dragon is a dramatic adventure-game series created by RGG Studio, based in Japan. Launched in 2005 with the goal of making a game for adults they can truly enjoy, it plunges its protagonists into the scheming, shadowy world of organized crime. Users will experience a complete crime suspense narrative rich with character interactions, personal struggles, and emotional goodbyes. Set in a bustling city district, the series packs in all sorts of entertainment—from clubs and karaoke to mahjong and pachinko.

Now the Like a Dragon IP is on Roblox for fans to develop worlds based on its rich setting and story, built under official licenses from RGG Studio. Whether they are already a devoted Yakuza fan or have never played before, we hope users around the globe will dive in and enjoy this vibrant new take on the series.

Netflix

We’re also excited to announce that Netflix, a leader in storytelling renowned for critically acclaimed original series and films, is extending its popular series, starting with "Stranger Things" and "Squid Game," on Roblox.

Kodansha

Kodansha is a Japanese global publishing powerhouse with IP spanning manga, anime, and literature. Roblox boasts a large, engaged anime fanbase, reflected in its many manga-themed experiences. Recognizing this potential, Kodansha launched a $1.5 million contest last year, empowering creators to build "Attack on Titan" adaptations for Roblox.

With the full support of Kodansha and the original creators, we’re excited to share that "Blue Lock" and "That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime" will be coming soon to the Licenses catalog.

“The creativity of the Roblox community is truly inspiring, and we are thrilled to offer our popular manga, novels, and their anime adaptations to creators through a new form of licensing," said Yoshinobu Noma, President and CEO of Kodansha Ltd. "This partnership allows us to deepen our connection with fans and explore new storytelling avenues within immersive experiences, in line with our global purpose: Inspire Impossible Stories."

Stay tuned for more exciting announcements in the coming weeks.

The Future of IP Management on Roblox

We’ll be working closely with our other launch partners to bring more of their IP to Roblox, and onboarding more IP holders throughout the year. We’re aiming to open the License Manager to all IP holders in the coming months. While full-experience adaptations are the first form of agreement that we’re offering, we’re exploring additional license types and offering more ways to bring IP to Roblox for all types of creators.

This journey with our creators and IP partners is just beginning, and we’re excited to see the collaborations and experiences that will emerge on Roblox.
