Working at Roblox: Meet Andrea Fletcher
Andrea Fletcher shares her experience as a software engineer working on our Social team.
Andrea is a software engineer focused on bringing people together and fostering communication on Roblox. She’s worked on several teams during her tenure at Roblox, and currently works on the Groups feature from within the Social team.
Describe your team's role here at Roblox.
We work on the features that bring people together and foster communication, like Chat, Friends, and Groups. We allow users to find the people and communities that matter to them, work to deepen those connections, and help developers to integrate these communities and people within their experiences
What is one of the most interesting aspects about working on your team at Roblox?
Despite being hired as a full-stack web developer and doing mostly web frontend work, the scope of things I've worked on has been very broad: I've fixed Android bugs, ran migrators, and made database changes. There's always an opportunity to learn other disciplines and pick up new skills, and my colleagues are very open to helping out within and outside of their teams.
Secondly, the main feature I work on—Groups—serves a lot of different purposes. You can have a Group to organize a development team, grow a community, or act as a faction in a roleplaying experience. When implementing new features, we have to make sure we're considering all use cases, ensuring that users have frictionless interactions with Roblox regardless of how they access the platform. This means that when we build a new feature, we make sure it can be leveraged across any device or browser. It's fun and challenging to put myself in the different shoes of our users and spend time understanding their needs and behaviors.
How is your experience on the team at Roblox different from other roles you’ve had?
As an engineer, my input in roadmap planning is valued and listened to. Our team has great relationships between engineering, product, and design. Everyone is encouraged to work together on features rather than do their separate parts and hand it off. This collaborative culture has helped me grow as more than just an engineer.
What’s one thing you love about the culture at Roblox?
Roblox is great because we really do care about our community. We have an extremely active developer forum, and a lot of employees have backgrounds as community members. I enjoy working on a product that has such a passionate and ambitious group of people using it, and it makes me excited to go to work every day.
I also love our company culture. We get things done but don’t take ourselves too seriously. Every Halloween we have a company-wide costume contest with prizes for the different categories. It’s so fun to see people go for Most Robloxian by dressing up as their Roblox characters or popular avatar bundles, or seeing an entire team in matching onesies or dressing up as their favorite television characters.
