Empowering the Roblox Community

Safety and civility are foundational to everything we do. We've built a platform with industry-leading safety and civility features. We continuously evolve our platform as our community grows and evolves.

Safety

Our safety & privacy systems and teams are constantly evolving and innovating to ensure everyone feels safe on Roblox, every day.

Securing your account

Use strong passwords
  • You should have a different password for every online account you have. Don't re-use a password. If anyone asks for your login, do not give it to them and be sure to check that you are on the legitimate Roblox.com site.

  • Also keep in mind that Roblox employees, including Customer Support, will never ask you for your password, so be mindful of nefarious users that ask you to share your screen, password, and 2-Step Verification ("2SV") codes.

Add an email address or phone number to your account
  • Add an email address or phone number to your account. This makes it easier to reset your password if you forget it and easier for us to help you when you contact us.

  • Make sure only you have access to the email address or phone number. If you put someone else's information, they will receive the reset instructions and can then gain access to your account and lock you out of it.

Two-factor authentication
  • Enable the 2-Step Verification feature to improve your account security. When you log in from a new device, you'll enter a unique security code from an authenticator app or the email Roblox sends you.

  • This feature makes sure no one else can login to your account, even if they know the password. (1) Since only you have access to the authenticator app or your email account, only you will be able to get the security code. An Authenticator app is our preferred choice as it is more secure. (2) Extra security so that you don't lose access to your experiences, Robux limiteds and more.

Interacting with the community

Chat filtering
  • We filter text chat on the platform to block inappropriate content, such as discriminatory speech, bullying, extremism, violence, sexual content, etc., as well as personal information and offsite links. We update our filters continuously, multiple times a day and filter text in multiple languages.

  • We apply stricter filtering policies to users 12 years old and younger. For example, words that are unknown to Roblox will be filtered for our younger users.

Blocking other users
  • You shouldn't have to interact with anyone you don't want to, which is why you have the option to block users from talking to you on Roblox.

  • For information about blocking another user from contacting or chatting, click here.

Reporting rule violations
  • We take violations of our Community Standards very seriously, and we've created tools to help the Roblox community report any inappropriate behavior.

  • You have the ability to report abuse from everywhere in the apps and experiences. To learn more about reporting violations to our moderation team, click here.

Discovering suitable content

Age verification
  • Age Verification is a new feature that is currently in testing on Roblox. Age Verification will allow you to access innovative social capabilities and age-appropriate content while also ensuring the safety of our community.

  • To learn how to verify your age ID, click here.

Experience guidelines
  • Experience Guidelines recommends the content suitability of an experience. Age recommendations are grounded in child development research and informed by industry standards. You can use parental controls to manage the age-rated content your child has access to.

Protecting your information

Our commitment to privacy
  • Roblox values your trust, so we want to tell you about the personal information we collect from you when you use our websites and app, how we use it, and who we share it with. That's why we've created this privacy policy to keep you informed.

Adjusting your privacy & chat settings
  • You have the ability to limit or disable who can chat with you, both in-app or in-experience, who can send you messages, and who can follow you into experiences you are in or invite you to private servers.

  • To learn how to review and edit your settings see here.

Combating fraud and scams
  • We do not tolerate fraud and scams, and have stringent rules and monitoring processes aimed at combating them. For example, we don't allow links to third-party sites that could be used to trick users into handing over cash, items, or Robux.

Civility

On Roblox, we are committed to providing a civil and respectful environment where people feel confident and safe to express themselves in ways that are productive and meaningful.

Rules for the community

Community Standards
  • Roblox's Community Standards set clear expectations for how to behave on Roblox. They require that everyone treat each other with civility and respect and help keep everyone safe by prohibiting content and behavior that may be inappropriate or harmful. We update these as the needs of our community and the product evolve.

  • We take our commitment to civility very seriously. If any users are found to be violating our Community Standards, they may be suspended or removed from the platform. In certain cases, Roblox also works proactively with authorities to report cases of illicit activities, violent threats, and other real-life harms.

Enforcing the rules

Moderation
  • We have a large, expertly trained team with thousands of members dedicated to protecting our users and monitoring 24/7 for inappropriate content.

  • Aided by state of the art technology, we conduct a safety review of uploaded images, audio, video, and 3D models, before they become available on our platform for our community to utilize in their creations.

  • We also filter text chat in multiple languages across the globe to block inappropriate content, such as discriminatory speech, bullying, extremism, violence, sexual content, etc., as well as personal information and instructions on how to move off the platform.

Reporting
  • We actively encourage our users to report any behavior or content they feel uncomfortable or concerned about. Users can easily mute or block participants that they come across in experiences and report inappropriate content or behavior.

  • When a user submits a report about a violation of our Community Standards, our safety team assesses complaints and takes appropriate action as quickly as possible. Actions can include a warning, temporary suspension, account or content removal, or proactive reporting to authorities.

  • To learn more about reporting violations to our moderation team, check out How to Report Rule Violations.

Research

At Roblox, we're continuously striving to be one of the most civil places online. Safety & civility will continue to be our top priority and we are committed to continually improving our systems to keep it that way.

We understand that our community needs many different types of support to maintain a healthy and positive online experience. We aim to equip them with skills and knowledge to help them build resilience to protect themselves and others on the platform.

We work with brand partners on experiences which promote well-being for the community, recently the partnership with Alo Yoga was popular and provided a space for mindfulness. We plan to continue focusing on highlighting experiences which provide enriching moments for all.

We are working with experts all around the world to undertake meaningful research on topics relevant to our audience and inform our product evolution. Last year we worked with Internet Matters, one of the leading digital parenting organizations in Europe, on the study 'Demystifying Teens Online Interactions'.

Podcasts

In December 2021, we launched our podcast, 'Into the Digital Future', jointly created with Sesame Workshop, hosted by the Joan Ganz Cooney Center. The podcast featured academics, and experts in child development, tech and parenting. Season two will be launching late in 2022.

Case Studies

We are proud to share some examples of how Roblox has had a positive impact on our community. Take a moment to watch these short films featuring two of our developers, Zoe Basil and CJ Oyer. See the Roblox stories videos here.

Roblox is committed to securing the best interests of children in our approach to how we provide our products and services.

Customizable parental controls

  • Roblox has several ways to monitor account activity. While logged in, you can view the following histories from their related sections:

    • Direct and small group chat (Chat feature found in the lower right corner of the apps). There you can see individual chat histories. This feature is limited to Friends, and Friends of Friends.

    • Private message history (Messages)

    • Friends and Followers (Friends)

    • Robux purchase, virtual item purchase, and trade history (my Transactions, browser only)

    • Creations such as experiences, items, sounds, ads (Create, browser only)

    • Recently played experiences (Home, Keep Playing or My Recent)

  • Parents have various tools located in Account Settings to limit and secure their child's account.

    • Account Restrictions: This feature allows parents to limit the account's ability to chat by disabling and locking an account's Contact Settings so that no one can send messages, chat in-app or in-experience with the child.

    • Parent PIN: Parents can add a four-digit PIN to lock the account settings. Once a PIN is added, it must be entered to make any changes to settings such as your password, email address, and privacy settings.

    • Age-Based Experience Controls: Experience Guidelines recommend the content suitability of an experience and allows parents to limit what experiences the account can join. These recommendations are grounded in child development research and informed by industry standards.

    • 2-Step Verification: This feature makes it so no one else can login to the account even if they know the password. When your child logs in, Roblox will send you a code via email. The account cannot log in without that code. Since only you have access to your email account, only you will be able to get the security code.

    • Monthly Spend Restrictions/Notifications: Parents can set a limit on the amount the account is able to purchase in real world currency on a per calendar month basis. This feature requires a verified parent's email and parental pin setup before being enabled. Parents can control notifications to their email about the account's spending with options including exceedingly high spending alerts and emails on all spending.

kidSAFE for COPPA

The Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) includes a provision enabling industry groups or others to submit for the Federal Trade Commission's approval self-regulatory guidelines that implement the protections of the Commission's final Rule. COPPA requires the Commission to act on a request for “safe harbor” treatment within 180 days of the filing of the request, and after the proposed guidelines have been subject to notice and comment.

Roblox is required to adhere to the program guidelines developed by kidSAFE's Safe Harbor program to demonstrate its commitment to COPPA compliance. kidSAFE audits Roblox on an annual basis for adherence to both COPPA and kidSAFE's own requirements for online child safety. For more information kidSAFE's requirements and application to the Commission, please see their approved guidelines.

In addition to providing an audit and a safe harbor for COPPA, kidSAFE serves as an ombudsman where parents and others may file complaints about their experiences with Roblox. These complaints are shared with us and require in some cases immediate action.

USK for German Regulatory Compliance (Video Games)

In Germany, content providers must comply with the obligations of the Youth Media Protection State Agreement (JMStV). This includes providers and developers of games, videos, vendors of online or retail media or operators of news portals for potentially harmful media contents (for example game trailers or movies).

For that reason, we partnered with USK (Entertainment Software Self-Regulation Body) to comply with German youth protection regulations. Additionally the USK functions as a liaison between the company and the German supervising bodies for its members.

As a member of the USK, Roblox was required to undergo an audit of its platform to receive the USK quality seal, which shows the compliance of legal regulations and a high youth protection standard of our offering.
